Homemade DIY Dryer Balls

So I’m sure you’ve heard that there are tons of nasty chemicals in dryer sheets right? The ‘clean’ smell is in fact a mix of crazy chemicals and when you smell this ‘clean’ scent you need to turn and RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! Okay, maybe that was a little dramatic….

Here are some yucky ingredients in dryer sheets so you can see for yourself:

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry-generated Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) from the 1990s, the following is a list of chemicals in fabric softener products, most in untested combinations. Liquid fabric softeners additionally may contain formaldehyde.
Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer.
Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant.
Ethanol: On the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders.
Limonene: Known carcinogen.
A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage.
Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list.
Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders.
Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic.
Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders.
Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled.

Maybe it isn’t such a drastic idea to run away…quickly…

After learning about this and running to the laundry room to throw my chemical-laden dryer sheets away, I had to find a natural alternative that still made my clothes smell good! After a quick google search I found this DIY tutorial on how to make dryer balls. Besides smelling AMAZING, these dryer balls also reduce my drying time and static! Now, who doesn’t love that?

Here is what you need to make your own chemical-free reusable dryer balls:

  • 100% Wool Yarn (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Leg of Panty Hose
  • Scissors
  • 10 Drops of Essential Oil per Dryer Ball (I would highly suggest Lavender, Purification & Citrus Fresh)

The essential oil smell and cleaning properties will last 1-2 months. When the smell runs out, just reapply and you are ready to go!

To start, wrap the yarn around your fingers 15-25 times.

Then, start wrapping the yarn in the middle of the oval you just made. Try to do this the same amount of times you did at first. Wrap it tight!

DSC01471Slowly but surely keep wrapping your yarn around itself until it starts to look like a ball (will look awkward for some time)

After awhile, it starts to look like a ball! Make it your desired size. The perfect size is probably softball size.

Once you are finished with one, repeat the steps until you have the desired amount of dryer balls. A good number is 5.

Once you have as many as you want, put your dryer balls into the leg of the panty hose. Tie off each of the dryer balls with a piece of non wool yarn so it doesn’t felt. DSC01486 Put through the washer & dryer along with a regular load. If you can, put them in a hot water load of laundry so the felting process takes place quicker!

This is what it should look like when it’s properly felted.

Be off and do great things (like making toxic-free heavenly smelling laundry!)

Stinky Sink?

So last Saturday we walked into our house after an evening out with friends and there was a smell. So we did what any logical people would do, we walked around the house until we found the culprit. It come down to 2 possible culprits, the trash or the sink. To rule out the sink, I would need to freshen it somehow. Then it hit me, my brilliant idea of the year (yes, I don’t have that many 😉 ). I’ve seen those little gel balls with good smelling(but probably chemical laden) properties that you put in your sink and turn on your garbage disposal.
So, I grabbed my lemon & orange essential oils as well as one capsule. I’m sure you know where I’m going with this but I’ll keep going for clarity sake. I put 2 drops of each oil in the capsule, started the water in the sink, put the capsule in and hit the garbage disposal. Voila! Instant fresh, citrus bliss!

What you need:
2-4 Drops of essential oils (get here)
1 Vegetable capsule
Stinky sink (optional)
Turns out that the sink wasn’t the culprit….It was the trash after all….and after writing all of this, I think to myself, why didn’t I try to take out the trash first? Surely that would have been easier? Oh well, I’m glad I ‘stumbled’ upon this trick! 🙂
What do you use to freshen your sink? Let me know in the comments below!
